One of these programs is the blackboard application system. This program allows for many different aspect of the classroom. It can be a direct connection from student to student, with discussion boards, and student to teacher. The teacher can also post assignments on blackboard, which can also be handed in through its d igital drop box. The Internet has also changed many classrooms and their structures. Some classes will meet half of the time in the classroom and half of the time in an online assignment. This creates a more flexible working atmosphere because there is not always the pressures of going to every class. Also, some classes are solely online meaning that you never have to set foot in an actual classroom. These allow for people with a busy family life or are incapable of coming to classes still receive their college degrees. Colleges and Universities also use the Internet to create and post their employment opportunities. What are Carbon Nanotubes Essay - 543 Words

Carbon nanotubes are long cylindrical structures of small nano-scale diameters formed only by carbon atoms. These structures can be understood as rolled sheets of graphene into a tube. The interactions between carbon atoms are mostly deï ¬ ned as Van der Waals forces. If we categorize CNTs by their structure, the following division can be obtained: - single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) - multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs) The above structures differ in the arrangement of graphene cylindrical structures . SWNTs have only one single layer of graphene tubes, whereas MWNTs have many. There are three geometrical types of nanotubes: armchair, zig-zag and chiral. Between these types there is a difference of how the graphene is formed into a†¦show more content†¦The latter is the most popular one as it has many advantages from large area deposition to low costs. What is more, it enables aligned CNTs growth at moderate temperatures. There are various conï ¬ gurations of CVD reactor used in the synthesis of CNTs such as horizontal, vertical or barrel. The vertical one is commonly used for large-scale CNTs production in which catalyst is ï ¬â€šuidized with high carrier gas ï ¬â€šow rates. The other method in CNTs growth uses a horizontal quartz reactor. It relies on the following carbon sources: gaseous hydrocarbons, e.g. methane or acetylene, or liquid ones such as alcohol, benzene or toluene. The most widely used carrier gases are argon and nitrogen. To prevent the oxidation of catalyst particles and production of various carbon impurities, in the process of CNTs catalytic synthesis hydrogen is used with the carrier gas [4]. In this method a non-uniform growth is observed as a result of the position dependent chemical reaction kinetics in the reactor. The growth rate, hybrid structure, diameter and number density of CNTs varies greatly, depending on the temperature and hydrogen ratio of the process. On the other hand spray pyrolysis CVD enables CNTs synthesis without the presence of hydrogen and at low carrier gas ï ¬â€šow rates. Here the growth rate and other signiï ¬ cant features of CNTs is also highly dependent on the parameter of the reaction, i.e. temperature,Show MoreRelatedCarbon Nanotubes : What Are They?1157 Words   |  5 PagesCarbon Nanotubes, What Are They? Personal Identity Essay Example For Students

Personal Identity Essay Personal Identity Essay can be broken down into three areas: 1.) Body 2.) Memory and 3.) Soul. In John Perrys A Dialogue on Personal Identity and Immortality these composing aspects of personal identity are discussed at length. In the reading and class discussions the body was defined clearly as a part of ones person, even alluded to at times as a prison in which one cannot escape until one dies. Memory and ones Soul seemed to be lumped together many times, understandably so, for the two bare many things in common such as they are intangible, cannot be completely defined as to what each exactly is (people remember things that did not actually happen to them, are those still memories?; do you have one soul throughout your life?), and both are thought to compose ones character and beliefs. This essay will deal with the two aspects of ones personal identity which are the most obvious in day to day life, that of the body and of soul/memory. As stated beforehand, memory and the soul bare many of the same qualities. The body and soul, however, also share this trait. Perry illustrates in his essay that the body and soul are similar because there is a link between one another, that is they both make up a person and are responsible for the qualities associated with being an individual (height, weight, character, belief, etc. Also a problem arrives in alterations to a body. If John goes to war, becomes injured by a mine, and then has his legs amputated is he not still the same person, John? Therefore, the preceding definition of body theory is not sufficient, since it does not account alterations to the same body. Yet another problem is numerical. If someone were to get a finger chopped off, would that finger be considered another person? What if a scientist was to use someones DNA and replicate another person with the same body? Surely just because there are two identical bodies, these bodies cannot be the same person. They would live two different lives. Therefore, the body theory alone cannot be considered a necessary and sufficient definition when defining personal identity. Another common theory of personal identity is the soul theory. This theory is: a person is has personal identity if and only if they have the same soul. The problem with this theory is arrived from the definition of a soul. Soul is a very difficult term. It is thought by many to be a spirit that passes from your body into another realm (i.e. , heaven, hell, etc.). However, since no one has ever seen, felt, touched, smelled, or tasted a soul, it is a mysterious phenomenon. Since we have no clear and distinct idea of a soul , it would not be wise to base the definition upon it. For instance, some religions believe in reincarnation after death. This is when a soul enters another body. With this in mind, someones soul such as Elvis could become reincarnated in someone else named John. However, we would not say that this Elvis and John are the same person . Therefore, the definition of the soul theory fails in that the definiens does not become sufficient for defining personal identity. The most recognized true philosophical theory of personal identity is the consciousness theory. The consciousness theory is believed by most to be the best definition of personal identity according to most philosophers. However, there are three different versions of the consciousness theory that will be discussed in further detail: the conscious self, experiential content, and connected stream of consciousness theories. First, we have the theory of a conscious self: a person has a personal identity if he or she has the same conscious self. In other words, if two people have a different conscious, then they each have personal identity. At a first glance, this would be a good definition of a personal identity. It is analogous to Descartes cogito, I think therefore I am. Being conscious would mean knowing that one exists, and able to think about any experience that happens. However the main fault with this is that it is a circular definition. Kabuki architecture Essay We are using the definiens in the definiendum which is not a good tactic of defining personal identity. Next, a common derivative of the consciousness theory is the consciousness of experiences theory. This is defined as having the same experiential content. This theory is based upon Lockes theory of the mind being blank, and building from .

Plot Essays - The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, Walter Mitty, Mitty

Plot ?The Secret Life of Walter Mitty? is a humorous short story that reveals the many fantasies of heroism Mr. Walter Mitty engages himself in to help him escape the daily pressures of life. The story begins with Mr. Mitty as the commander on a military plane ordering the crew to proceed through a dangerous storm, and reassuring the scared passengers that everything will be ok. Reality soon intrudes, though, and the heroic image is replaced by a description of Mitty driving his wife to her regular visit with the hairdresser (DLB 102 326). The story quickly continues with Mr. Mitty driving away from the hairdresser. While he is trying to enter the parking garage through the exit he is engulfed in another fictitious fantasy, this time around he is imagining himself as a brilliant doctor called upon to perform an operation on a prominent banker. However, his fantasy is quickly dissolved by the parking lot attendant who is capable of maneuvering Mittty's car better than he himself can. The s tory is concluded as Mr. Mitty stands alone smoking a cigarette. He falls into another fantasy, this time he is in front of a firing squad. He tosses the cigarette away and faces the guns courageously-?Walter Mitty the Undefeated, inscrutable to the last.? (Wilson 185). Throughout the story Mitty lives in a reverie of consisting of situations in which he is a hero: commander of a navy airplane, surgeon, trial witness, bomber pilot, and condemned martyr (Magill 864). Characters ?The Secret Life of Walter Mitty? is about a man whose ordinary life leads him to an array of heroic fantasies. It all started with Mrs. Mitty's dominating personality. She nagged him to guy galoshes, to put on his gloves, and to drive more slowly (Wilson 185). But another example of her domination happens near the end of the story just after Mrs. Mitty sees Walter sitting in the hotel lobby. At this time it is no surprise that Walter is engulfed in another one of his fantasies, this time he is seeing himself as a heroic bomber pilot about to go on a dangerous mission. His wife seeing that he is slightly out of it slaps his shoulder and begins to ask what he was thinking about. Walter then goes on to explain what he was thinking and gives his classic quotation: ?I was thinking,?does it ever occur to you that I am sometimes thinking On the other hand Walter Mitty is a daydreamer who imagines himself the hero of his fantasies as a navy pilot, and noble victim of a firing squad (Magill 864). The dream is clearly an escape from the external life which humiliatingly interrupts it: his wife's mothering, the arrogant competence of a parking attendant and policeman, the humiliating errands of removing tire chains, buying overshoes and asking for puppy biscuit (Magill 865). In his dreams he is Lord Jim, the misunderstood hero, ?inscrutable to the last?; in his daily life he is a middle-aged husband enmeshed in a web of humdrum (Wilson 184).
