Nature as the Mean of Expression in Romanticism

The à ©poque of Enlightment was trailed by Romanticism. It was the time of extraordinary changes on the planet standpoint. This period communicated a solid analysis of the past one. The standards of composing and the subjects had changed. The primary saint of the Romantic writing was a desolate man with reasonable soul and segregated from the general public as far as his impression of the truth. The time of Romanticism is portrayed by its location to nature, as it were, the world was seen through the nature.Advertising We will compose a custom article test on Nature as the Mean of Expression in Romanticism explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More â€Å"It is described by a move from the organized, scholarly, contemplated approach of the 1700’s to utilization of the creative mind, opportunity of thought and articulation, and a romanticizing of nature† (â€Å"Romanticism†). Along these lines, nature was the fundamental device of Romantic artists and essayists they utilized so as to portray various parts of life and human spirit specifically. Sentimental authors underlined the association of man and nature. They took a gander at this association from the ethical viewpoint. The primary individual who sketched out the standards of Romanticism was Jean Jacques Rousseau who said about the human opportunity, affectability of human spirit and association with nature: â€Å"Rousseau was to have the most profound and most enduring impact upon oneself comprehension of the Romantic mind† (Travers 4). In Britain, toward the finish of the eighteenth and start of the nineteenth hundreds of years, Romanticism grew rapidly and was the most expressive. Various creators uncovered to nature so as to communicate their aims and musings. Besides, â€Å"English writers, for example, Lord Byron and Persey Bysshe Shelley utilized nature as their motivation. They composed of nature being wild and without rationale and their sonnets evoked solid emotions in their readers† (Gunderson 15). Extraordinary compared to other sentimental essayists of England were William Wordsworth, Samuel Coliredge, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Shelley. They utilized very unique individual portrayals of nature, be that as it may, the one thing is normal: the depictions of nature in their works are planned for delineating the characters, conduct, emotions and worries of the primary saints. Onno Oerlemans says, â€Å"I think, that Wordsworth is the most original†¦.Wordsworth’s nature (as patterns of life, or a seal of endlessness) once in a while gives the sort of relief†¦Ã¢â‚¬ In his Tinturn Abbey, he utilized the depictions of nature to show the sentiments of hero and his recollections. For him, nature is the kind of interminable instructor of human. â€Å"Nature to Wordsworth is a mother-goddess who instructs the soul† (Gleckner 311), he praises: Knowing that Nature never did double-cross The heart that cherishe d her; ’tis her benefit, Through all the long stretches of this our life, to lead From satisfaction to happiness: for she can so illuminate The brain that is inside us, so intrigue With quietness and excellence, thus feed With elevated contemplations, that neither one of the evils tongues, Rash decisions, nor the jeers of childish men, Nor welcome where no graciousness is, nor all (Wordsworth 212)Advertising Looking for article on writing dialects? He utilizes the examination of the s tream being conceived in mountains with the idea being conceived in one’s psyche: In the wild woods, among the mountains solitary, Where cascades around it jump perpetually, Where woods and winds battle, and an immense waterway 10 Over its stones unendingly blasts and raves (Shelley 64) Moreover, he utilizes the depictions of a â€Å"dark valley† that delivers the impact of trans on the peruser. The sobriquets and pictures they make bring out profound feelings in perusers. In Samuel Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner, one can see the portrayals of the ocean. The tempest and the dead quiet of the ocean are the primary way to uncover the quintessence of the story. Additionally, the creator utilizes the fledgling gooney bird as a similitude that implied â€Å"the will of God† and now and then contrasted and the image demise. The pictures of nature in work of each creator are very extraordinary, Wordsworth portrays it delicately utilizing exceptional des ignations; Shelley utilizes the pictures of nature so as to show the progression of time and his distress, his photos are progressively dim and fierce. Coleridge portrays the ocean, and in any event, when it is quiet, it despite everything summons repulsiveness and premonition of shrewdness. One progressively superb author of the time of Romanism is Mary Shelley with her acclaimed Frankenstein. This author is most likely the person who utilized the pictures of nature so as to uncover each and every idea and feeling of one of the fundamental characters Victor.Advertising We will compose a custom paper test on Nature as the Mean of Expression in Romanticism explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More The creator utilizes regular wonders figuratively so as to depict Victor’s early years: â€Å"I think that its emerge, similar to a mountain stream, from disgraceful and nearly overlooked sources; yet expanding as it continued, it turned into the deluge which, in its co urse, has cleared away the entirety of my expectations and joys† (Shelley, 21). Also, every Victor’s feeling is associated with nature. The nature is one that causes him to endure horrendous minutes throughout his life. To summarize everything, it ought to be referenced once again that nature and its pictures filled in as the primary apparatus for the journalists of Romanticism. They saw the world through the nature and scanned responds to for interminable inquiries of being. At long last, all sentimental scholars were incredible bosses of depiction. The Man Who Brought Geometry to the World

Much of our modern science, and astronomy in particular, has roots in the ancient world. In particular, the Greek philosophers studied the cosmos and tried to use the language of mathematics to explain everything. The Greek philosopher Thales was one such man. He was born around 624 BCE, and while some believe his lineage was Phoenician, most consider him to be Milesian (Miletus was in Asia Minor, now modern Turkey) and he came from a distinguished family. It is difficult to write about Thales since none of his own writing survives. He was known to be a prolific writer, but as with so many documents from the ancient world, his vanished through the ages. He is mentioned in other peoples works  and seems to have been quite well-known for his time among fellow philosophers and writers. Thales was an engineer, scientist, mathematician, and philosopher interested in nature. He may have been the teacher of Anaximander (611 BC - 545 BCE), another philosopher. Some researchers think Thales wrote a book on navigation, but there is little evidence of such a tome. In fact, if he wrote any works at all, they did not even survive until the time of Aristotle (384 BCE- 322 BCE). Even though the existence of his book is debatable, it turns out that Thales probably did define the constellation Ursa Minor. Seven Sages Despite the fact that much of what is known about Thales is mostly hearsay, he was definitely well-respected in ancient Greece. He was  the only philosopher before Socrates to be counted among the Seven Sages. These were  philosophers in the 6th century BCE who were  statesmen and law-givers, and in Thaless case, a natural philosopher (scientist).   There are reports that Thales predicted an eclipse of the Sun in 585 BCE. While the 19-year cycle for lunar eclipses was well known by this time, solar eclipses were harder to predict, since they were visible from different locations on Earth and people were not aware of the orbital motions of the Sun, Moon, and Earth that contributed to solar eclipses. Most likely, if he did make such a prediction, it was a lucky guess based on experience saying that another eclipse was due. After the eclipse on 28 May, 585 BCE, Herodotus wrote, Day was all of a sudden changed into night. This event had been foretold by Thales, the Milesian, who forewarned the Ionians of it, fixing for it the very year in which it took place. The Medes and Lydians, when they observed the change, ceased fighting, and were alike anxious to have terms of peace agreed on. Impressive but Human Thales is often credited with some impressive work with geometry. It is said he determined the heights of pyramids by measuring their shadows and could deduce the distances of ships from a vantage point onshore. How much of our knowledge of Thales is accurate is anyones guess. Most of what we know is due to Aristotle who wrote in his Metaphysics: Thales of Miletus taught that all things are water. Apparently Thales believed the Earth floated in water and everything came from water. Like the absent-minded professor stereotype still popular today, Thales has been described in both glowing and derogatory tales. One story, told by Aristotle, says Thales used his skills to predict that the next seasons olive crop would be bountiful. He then purchased all the olive presses and made a fortune when the prediction came true. Plato, on the other hand, told a story of how one night Thales was gazing at the sky as he walked and fell into a ditch. There was a pretty servant girl nearby who came to his rescue, who then said to him How do you expect to understand what is going on up in the sky if you do not even see what is at your feet? Thales died about 547 BCE in his home of Miletus. Edited and updated by  Carolyn Collins Petersen.

Explore the Ways in Which Stevenson Creates an Effective...

Explore the ways in which Stevenson creates an effective horror story in â€Å"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.† Robert Stevenson wrote â€Å"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde† in 1885. In â€Å"Dr. Jekyll and My Hyde,† Stevenson creates the atmosphere of a horror story. He does this through many different techniques. He makes subtle suggestions that the central characters lead a double life, creating suspense, dramatic events and the taking of innocent victims. In chapter one, Stevenson creates an enormous amount of suspense and intrigue in the description of Jekyll’s house. Firstly, as Stevenson describes the street, he makes a massive contrast between the attractive street: â€Å"The street and general cleanliness,† and Mr. Hyde’s house: bore in every feature the marks†¦show more content†¦Hyde. As the reader and Utterson have, no clear idea of who Hyde is, when Hyde starts to approach the awaiting Utterson it causes a huge amount of suspense: â€Å"The steps drew swiftly nearer and swelled out suddenly louder.† The tension is intensifies as the steps get closer. Stevenson takes his time to describe Hyde so when the reader is finally about to encounter Hyde is it extremely power as we do not know whether he will commit another horrendous murder, this time on Utterson In chapter five Stevenson does a useful description of the laboratory. Utterson describes â€Å"three dusty windows barred with iron.† However, the year before, Mr Enfield describes the same window as, â€Å"always shut but...clean.† This helps Stevenson create an effective horror story because this slight detail hints that perhaps Mr. Hyde is slowing but steadily taking control of Dr. Jekyll and the murderous evil man will continue before Dr. Jekyll has a chance to stop it all. Stevenson makes Hyde seem a monster/animal/supernatural evil in the way that he is described. Hyde clearly represents â€Å"the beast in man† and is described in a number of animalistic images. When Utterson confronts him, he is described as â€Å"hissing† like a cornered snake; Poole describes him as a â€Å"thing† which cries out â€Å"like a rat†; he moves â€Å"like a monkey† and screams in â€Å"mere animal terror.† He is described as â€Å"A Juggernaut†, â€Å"Like Satan†, â€Å"Deformed†, â€Å"Dwarfish†, â€Å"Hardly human†,Show MoreRelated The Representation of Evil in Stevensons Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde1490 Words   |  6 PagesThe Representation of Evil in Stevensons Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde This essay will show how evil is represented in Robert Louis Stevensons Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Relationship of Demetrius and Helena Essay Example For Students

Relationship of Demetrius and Helena Essay In the following speech, which uses the technique stichomythia, we understand how strong Demetrius feelings are for Hermia, I frown upon him; yet he loves me still. Hermia is horrible to Demetrius yet he is still besotted with her; she explains that no matter how much she ignores him he still loves her. This ironically is what is happening to Helena. The more I love, the more he hateth me. The nicer she is to Demetrius, the nastier he is to her, thus it is obvious love is not running smoothly for Helena. In Helenas soliloquy she reveals her feelings for Demetrius. She shows the audience how much she cares for him. When she finds out about Hermia and Lysanders plan to run away together she states, I will go tell him of fair Hermias flight. The deep feelings she has for Demetrius lead her to risk their friendship and shows us that when love is not running smoothly it can make you do irrational things and behave out of character. Within this soliloquy Helena also talks about love making you blind claiming: Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and Nor hath loves mind of any judgment taste. When you are in love you only see what you want to. We have heard this before when Egeus explains that a spell had overcome his daughter causing her to only see the good things and not the bad. Helena thinks that Demetrius has made the wrong decision and is lacking judgment because Hermia doesnt actually want him. She believes that he has been beguiled into loving Hermia, once again linking with what Egeus thinks. We find out that Demetrius used to be in love with Helena, So he dissolved and showers of oaths did melt. She is saying metaphorically that when he met Hermia all his feelings for Helena disappeared. Sadly it is evident that her feelings did not change. The whole soliloquy is ironic because he hates her, yet she still loves him. She only sees the worthy things in Demetrius and not how horrible he is to her. True love not running smooth can also crush someones self-esteem as we see when Helena claims, I am as ugly as a bear. She has no confidence and explains how she is Demetrius spaniel. Shakespeare uses this metaphor to emphasize that Helena is prepared to act like a dog; devoted to its owner. Helena also realizes that nothing can hurt more than the person you love not reciprocating your feelings, The wildest hath not such a heart as you. This is believed to be the cruelest thing and is echoed later on in the story in different situations. This argument between Helena and Demetrius carries on into the woods where we notice the change of scene. Shakespeare emphasizes this by the use of rhyming couplets that the characters now speak in to give the magical and spell-like feel. Oberon, the king of the fairies, is conveniently watching the argument. Thou shalt fly him, and he shall seek thy love. Oberon vows to help Helena and tells Puck to use a special potion on Demetrius when Helena is near. The potion will restore harmony within their relationship and love will run smoothly for them. As we are now in the woods we are introduced to the fairies, in particular Titania and Oberon who are the king and queen of the fairies. The fairies were considered bad spirits and people believed that they could curdle milk in a bowl, make fruit rot on trees, change the weather and many other things too. Many people thought they lived in a kingdom of their own and were invisible to humans, but occasionally they allowed themselves to be seen as if in a dream. .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 , .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 .postImageUrl , .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 , .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224:hover , .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224:visited , .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224:active { border:0!important; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224:active , .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224 .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8712d0a056e26a3d9874b35af8bb9224:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre Nature in Jane Eyre C EssayHence the title, because in the play Puck states that it is going to be a dream to the characters. Titania and Oberon are significant characters in the play and their relationship is not running smoothly. Their relationship has a big affect on the mortal realm and this involves the audience. Puck is Oberons servant and he tells the audience a lot at the beginning relating to the king and queens relationship. And jealous Oberon would have the child/Knight of his train. Titania has an adopted child and this is what their argument is about. Oberon wants to take the child from Titania because she gives a lot of her attention to him, which makes Oberon very jealous and his immaturity leads him to get revenge on his wife. Oberon also feels threatened by Titania. As he is the male he should be the dominant one, but Titania is a strong character and because of this there is no compromise in their relationship; neither of them is willing to back down in an argument which we can see. The argument has major effects on the mortal world, as we learn from Titanias speech. She speaks in blank verse to show her nobility and how important she is. The atmosphere at this stage is very depressing which Shakespeare emphasises by the fact that no one is happy. This is because of the effects of their argument. One of the effects is on the seasons, The nine-mens- Morris is filled up with mud. The seasons are mixed up and no one knows what season they are in, therefore the crops are unable to grow. At this time the people relied on the seasons and weather so that their crops could grow but now, because of the argument, there is no food. Titania states that they are the parents of the problem and they are the only ones who can sort it out. Oberon hints to the audience that he will get revenge on Titania in some way. Well, go thy way. Thou shalt not from this grove / Till I torment thee for this injury. This shows his anger because Titania will not give him the boy. He acts very childishly and comes across as someone who cannot have his pride destroyed. Titania has disobeyed him; therefore Oberon has to get his own back. When Oberon is talking to Puck he speaks in rhyming couplets. This emphasises the scene they are in but also the fact that they are talking about potions so there is a magical atmosphere. He is discussing the potion that will help restore harmony in the relationship of Demetrius and Helena; however Shakespeare implies that love should not be interfered with. This is ironic because on one hand he is using the potion for a good reason, but on the other he is using it to punish Titania and not compromise, which would be more mature. Here I think the audience feel Oberon should concentrate on his own problem he has with his wife before he deals with other relationships. When the potion is put on peoples eyes as they are sleeping, the first thing they see on waking they fall in love with. Oberon uses the potion for Titania in a way that will cause her to fall in love with a beast or a mortal. The next thing then she, waking, looks upon, Be it a lion, bear or wolf, or bull. This is his way of getting revenge on Titania and once again this shows the audience his lack of compromise and love of deception. When Oberon is speaking to Puck about the flower the potion is made from he talks in rhyming couplets. Shakespeare does this to stress that they are in the woods, and are talking about magical powers; this therefore makes the atmosphere very enchanting. .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 , .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 .postImageUrl , .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 , .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0:hover , .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0:visited , .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0:active { border:0!important; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0:active , .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0 .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0169e7e7cd55434ceda018125de8dcb0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Angela's Ashes written by Frank McCourt EssayIn Act 2, Scene 2 Titania is getting ready to go to bed and coincidentally this is when Oberon plays his trick on her, So good night, with lullaby. Her fairies exit the setting and she is left to sleep. Little does she know she will soon wake up and be in love with a beast or a mortal, When thou wakst, it is thy dear. / Wake when some vile thing is near! Oberon squeezes the juice onto her eyes and Shakespeare uses poetry and rhyming couplets to emphasise the fact that Oberon is using a magical potion in the fairy tale setting of the woods.

A Wise Decision Essays - Brian Dugan, Jeanine Nicarico Murder Case

A Wise Decision A Wise Delay Governor Ryan's decision to suspend the death penalty is already starting to have a valuable impact on the rest of nation. Other states are starting to aid in Governor Ryan's quest to improve death penalty systems. Last week, a representative from the state of Wisconsin, requested that President Clinton put a hold on executions until the federal death penalty system can be reviewed. Clinton is an avid supporter of the death penalty and only promised to consider it. Since 1973, eighty-five people have been released from death row in the federal system because of mis-verdicts. Twenty-one federal inmates still remain on death row. Juan Raoul Garza is one of these death row inmates. Despite the governments past mistakes, he is scheduled to be executed this year. President Clinton should think long and hard before reopening the federal death chamber. Because the federal justice system dose not do its job correctly, many innocent people may have or will die on death row. According to the article, A Federal Execution Moratorium-misconduct, unbelievably erroneous evidence and false testimony by jailhouse informants can and has lead to mistaken verdicts. Rolando Cruz is an excellent example of a terrible mistake made by the federal government. He was convicted of the 1983 rape and murder of ten-year-old Jeanine Nicarico, and put on death row. His freedom was suspended to him even after Brian Dugan came forth to admit his sole involvment in the murder. Cruz remained on death row while prosecutors try to prove Dugan was lying! DNA testing proved that Cruz was not the source of semen samples taken from Nicarico's body; however, Dugan was a perfect match. Cruz remained on death row. November 4, 1995, 12 years after his original arrest, Cruz was released. Not only did Cruz loose twelve prime years of his life; He almost lost his whole life. Judge Ronald Mehling said he released Cruz because the initial murder investigation was ?sloppy, very sloppy?, and the government's case against Cruz was riddled with lies and mistakes. It is suggested in the article that a wise approach to this problem would be to appoint a commission to study the federal death penalty system. I am in agreement that Clinton must suspend the death penalty until the bugs in this system are totally irradiated. More states need to come forth to force Clinton to see that he needs to do more than think about suspending the death penalty. Taking innocent lives is wrong. no matter who or how powerful you are!

How to Make Colored Smoke Bombs (That Actually Work)

How to Make Colored Smoke Bombs (That Actually Work) Regular smoke bombs are easy to make  and produce stunning, reliable results. You might think making colored smoke is as easy as adding a chemical that burns with... well... colored smoke. However, it is more complicated than that because most chemicals produce white, brown or at best yellow smoke. There are formulations for colored smoke that involve mixing in a special organic dye that will produce a colored cloud when the dye is vaporized. The project is straightforward, but its trickier to get great results because the goal is to heat the dye, but not ignite it, and then force it into the air. Here are some tips to ensure success. Use an Appropriate Dye You cant burn any old dye for colored smoke bombs! Laundry dye, for example, wont work. Examples of compounds that do work include para-nitroaniline red, auramine (yellow) and synthetic indigo (blue). There are several other dyes that will work. You can mix the dyes to get different colors. Measure by Weight Not Volume The proportions of ingredients are important. The volume of the ingredients may be affected by how they have been processed, so the weight is the best means of measurement. Use Finely Powdered Materials Even if you have the exact chemicals you need, you wont be able to get good results unless the consistency of the mixture is fine enough. This is true for most pyrotechnic formulations, so you may be aware of this. If you arent seeing good results, re-make the mixture, processing the ingredients separately in a coffee or spice mill before mixing them together. Never mill the oxidizer and the fuel in the same container, since a fire may result. Use a separate grinder for chemicals like potassium chlorate and potassium nitrate. Reinforce the Canister for a Smoke Grenade If you are making a smoke grenade, which is intended to shoot out a dense stream of smoke, you need to reinforce the paper or cardboard so that it wont blow apart under pressure, ruining your effect. It is common practice to glue cardboard circles onto the bottom of cylindrical smoke grenades. You can wrap strapping tape or masking tape around the container to give it strength. Tape around the fuse so that the smoke will have a small opening. This will cause the smoke to shoot out further. Bend the Fuse to the Side and Tape It Similarly, you dont want the smoke bomb to blow the fuse out of the canister before the smoke really gets going. If you bend the fuse to the side and tape it down, rather than leaving the fuse standing straight up in the tube, youll reduce the chance that the smoke bomb wont light. Dont worry, the flame will still travel down the taped fuse into the smoke bomb. Disclaimer: Please be advised that the content provided by our website is for EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. HRM Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

HRM - Coursework Example As revenue for work force development is reduced, the organizations are faced with a dilemma. Reduce organization-learning programs to lower costs or come up with new approaches to create a competitive edge. â€Å"As an act of ritual during recessions, an extreme force comes from the top to reduce cost. This expected dominant logic exists in many organizations.† (Reyes 2011 pg56) During this time, organizations cycles in and out of recession, they opt to downsize as a way of saving the firm from making loses. This in turn interrupts organization-learning strategies inhibiting organization learning. In addition, this achieved through elimination of learning programs that do not have direct impact on the profits of the firm. Therefore during recession organization learning programs are the first to be eliminated. Organization learning is more than just developing the skills and perception of the staff about the firm for their own personal gain. It is about training the employees to do their best while on duty and provide result to a company. The inception of these ideas has lead to significant mastery of organizational operations by the staff members. â€Å"Organization learning is perceived as one of the most crucial sources of competitive advantage within the context of profit motivated management.† This implies that the firm needs to be in harmony with its external environment, which is characterized with emerging trends and unique developments, any organization therefore, through learning has to develop a connection between its workforce and external forces. As companies such as Golf Place (ST Andrews) Limited face un anticipated levels of changes. They are expected to grasp a deep understanding of both internal and external business space of the business that they are engaging in, to sharpen its competitive edge. It is also vital for the formulation

Personal and professional skills, my weaknesses and strengths

Personal and professional skills, my weaknesses and strengths This report is to examine my personal and professional skills, to identify my weaknesses and strengths and make some personal plans on how to improve and enhance them. Activity 1: Personal Skills Review Decision Making Everyday and every step of the way we are making decision, one way or another. Decision making involves risks, and I would say that it is one of my weaknesses. It could be the culture or the familial orientation I have, where decision making is the responsibility of the father or the husband in the family. I know I have a good understanding and better judgement when it comes to assessing certain situations, but my skills in decision making is not exercised. I want to develop that skill but I had no confidence in voicing out my opinion in the workplace and at home. As Pettinger (2001) said it is impossible to predict with certainty the outcome of decisions, but it is possible to take certain steps to assess the possible range of outcomes. In decision making, it is always coupled with certain risks that the decision maker has to undergo. I should be able to handle and cope with the outcome of the decision I make. I should be prepared to face what could possibly be the outcome of my decisions. There should be an alternative plan if anything goes wrong. Careful planning must be considered before coming up with a decision in order to avoid negative results. I should study and analyse important information relative to the planned activities before making a decision in order to lessen if not to avoid pitfalls in decision making. Taking ample time to review planned activities is one of the best strategies for the managers and supervisors to consider in ensuring successful outcomes. I should enhance my skills in decision making by participating in the planning of activities at home and in the workplace. I lack the determination and the courage for fear of making failures and blamed for it. The lack of courage to stand up and said my piece has shunned all the good opportunities that had come my way. I should try to develop confidence and take some risks in order to achieve what I wanted to accomplish with my life. Effective Communication As an individual I believe that effective communication keeps a healthy personal or professional relationship with the people I am interacting with, be it at home, at work or in any circumstances where my personal opinion is required. There are a lot of ways to communicate and it is not only the idea of transmitting my message but also how I deliver the message effectively. It is clear therefore, that it is not just the words stated or written that are important, but also (Pettinger, 2001): The ways they are spoken or written The context in which they are spoken or written The relationship between those giving and those receiving What is not stated or written What is precise What is deliberately vague Effective communication elicits good relations, improves the quality of life, motivates people and therefore yields better interpersonal relationship at home and at work. In my personal experience, I am successful in transmitting messages verbally and get feedback promptly. I have a good skill in verbal communication and consider this as one of my strengths. It is an advantage, I would say, because I was able to help the small business of my husband and his brother. I may not be a part of the decision making process concerning the business but I was able to attract customers through my ability to communicate effectively. My personal strategy is listening to suggestions made by clients; listen to questions raised before giving my personal opinion about the situation. This could open communication line between me and the customers and create friendly relationship and gain their loyalty and patronage. Negotiating Skills John Hayes (2002) said that we are all negotiators. Negotiation is a process of joint decision making in which people with different preferred outcomes interact in order to resolve. Negotiating is the process of coming to terms of agreement considering the factors of personal relationship, the status, gender, racial, and age differences, reputation, expectations, timing and work pressure. It is the art of discussing with another party to come up with agreeable terms such as determining what I and that of the other party wants and dont want for a particular situation. It is the understanding of what is acceptable to me and for the other party and what is not acceptable. Negotiating is a two-way process. You take and benefit without having the other party being disadvantaged. I have a personal talent in negotiating things and I have applied it to help the business run by my husband and his brother. I build rapport with our clients and customers. Negotiation is a win-win process. In situations like this when the customer demands some things and services relative to the business, I am in the frontline to deal with the situation. I see to it that the demands of the customers will be granted without compromising the generated profit of the company. When customers start to negotiate, they have already in mind the kind of benefit they hoped to get. In negotiating I have to be pleasant in dealing with the person I am making a deal with but sometimes I have to be a little bit aggressive but not intimidating to protect my own desired outcomes. My skill in negotiating has helped a lot in the success of our small business. I gained not only customers but also good friends. My communication skills improved my ability to interact with the people I am dealing with in e veryday life. Even in my own home I practice how to negotiate because children are very good negotiators. It is not giving the desires of the other party while my own interest suffers and vice versa. There is always a common ground of agreement to achieve that would benefit both negotiating parties and that is where my skill in negotiating will take place. Activity 2: Professional Skills Review Coaching Skills Coaching is assessing the people and organizational needs and provided them with the necessary knowledge, skills and expertise to achieve organizational goals. A coach or a mentor is an advisor who guides the person to perform better or to learn new techniques on how to do task effectively. A manager in an organization will help improve the working performance of the employees if the manager possesses the skill on how to coach. Coaching is more than just imparting your ideas, skills and knowledge to your subordinates. According to Zeus, P and Skiffington, S. (2002) coaching also focuses on function and performance of an individual; builds rapport and listening, questioning and reflecting skills; use goal setting and action plan. It is also monitoring the extent of their progress and assesses the area the learner still need to improve. The employees of the Parts and Services Company produce very good services to their clients because they are very skilled in their craft. They have acq uired their skill thru their managers who are very patient in introducing some new skills to them. A good performance reflects a good coach. Employees will have a high regard for themselves if they know the details of how a certain task is done. A productive employee will also produce good results and the credit will go to the manager who serves as a mentor or coach. An effective coaching will help employees to be motivated to learn more not only for purposes of career advancement but also for the companys objectives to be realized. Employee effectiveness also depends how they are trained skilfully, either by coaching or mentoring, and positive counselling. Learning cannot be applied effectively in the absence of one-on-one follow up from the coach. It is necessary for the manager coach to see how much the employee has learned from the personal training given by putting the learner to practice what he has learned. The coaching technique must vary from person to person because there are fast learner people and some need detailed explanation and information. That is why a good coach must possess the quality of being patient. Leadership Skills Through good mentoring and counselling we can produce good leaders. Wikipedia-Dictionary defined counselling as the provision of assistance and guidance in resolving personal, social or psychological problems and difficulties especially by a trained person on a professional basis. In the other hand, mentoring is a personal development tool helping people to progress and realize its potentials. The managers of Parts and Service Company were not only good in their skills in counselling, but are also good mentors. They identify the employees who have the potentials of becoming good leaders and encouraged and helped them to develop their skills through mentoring and counselling. A good leader must have a flexible personality. Leadership skill is acquired, therefore through practice and experience a manager can be a good and effective leader. The success of an organization depends greatly on the leadership of the people managing it. Leadership is the capacity to influence other people in the organization. A good leader is followed and respected by the people he is working with. Parts and Service Company employees look up to their manager not only because he has contributed much to the achievement of company objectives, but because of his manner in leading the people he is working with. He does not only lead people but he also coaches at the same time, imparting to them his expertise that made him the role model in the organization. He leads by example. The qualities of a good leader is characterized by a having a sense of responsibility, work hard to complete a task, determination to achieve goals, exercise initiative in social situations, self confident, the ability to respond positively to stress and the ability to influence other people. (Bernard Bass, 3rd Edition). Employees are encouraged to find some ways to develop and enhance skills. They are motivated to strive and work hard to be as successful as their leader. A leader who does not care about the welfare of the employees can do nothing to meet organizational objectives set by the management. Employees will not get anything good from leaders that think only of their own personal benefit without considering the welfare of other people in the organization. Good leaders are first to approach their staff to give commendations if the job is satisfactorily done and the first to show concern to those who need encouragement. We always look up to a good and successful leader and we want to be influenced by their ability to handle complex things that led to their success. Their ability to cope with stressful situations, to stand and endure failure, to solve problems in the organization is admirable. Successful leaders have gone through a lot of frustrations but managed to overcome it and boost their confidence as an individual. Multi-Tasking Skills Multi-tasking is the ability of the person to do more than one task all at the same period of time. The employees given the responsibility to do this task must be well trained in performing the tasks in order to complete it in a given time. Multi-tasking saves cost and money but the quality of work may suffer as a result. It can benefit the organization because of reduced cost. Likewise it will benefit the employees because it will develop their knowledge and skills in performing some tasks other than what they are familiar doing. Adjustment in the part of the employees performing multi tasking is difficult if the sudden change is introduced. Multi task require a high degree of skill because the employee is placed in a variety of task that he must be ready to perform and complete. It is difficult for the person doing the multi-tasking but in the long run it is beneficial to the person because it will give him the advantage to be recognized if he performs what is expected of him to do . This will give the employee the chance for career advancement. The person doing multi-tasking must be creative and innovative. But the management must take some caution not to overload the person doing the multi-task. The person might be stressed out and cannot perform well. Poor performance will result to poor productivity. Stressed people have the tendency to get sick that could be avoided. Management must follow up the output of the person doing the multi task to know if the person is capable of doing it and see to it that that the person doing is well trained to avoid problems that can affect the performance of the entire organization. Multi-tasking helps the organization in many ways one of which is the financial cost. The task of two people can be performed by one if there is similarity of function in the task. The quality of output will not be affected if the mentors are religiously following and monitoring the performance of the employees. Counselling is important to give encouragement to the employees with overloaded tasks. Mentoring and counselling is important where multi-tasking is introduced to the organization. Task 2: PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING Activity 1: Personal audit I requested two (2) of my friends to help me assess my personal skills and to give me pointers on how to develop my weak points. As decision making is my weakness which I wanted to improve, they have given me their personal opinion on how to develop it. They suggested that I should: Assert if I think that my opinion is worth considering Communicate effectively so that my views will be heard Build my confidence Present relevant points of my opinion Assert to present my good ideas The points they have suggested will help develop and enhance my decision making skill. I have good and better ideas when it comes to family matters. My husband has the authority to make decisions in my home I have the tendency to keep silent. I have to be assertive because I want to be a part in the decisions and plans in my family. I have to enhance my communication skills in order to be heard and respected. And I also need to build my confidence in order to have the courage to assert. B. PERSONAL AUDIT QUESTIONNAIRE Please tick the appropriate option on the following rating scale (1-5), 1 being the weakest and 5 being the strongest. Name: ____________________________ Date: ______________________ 1 2 3 4 5 I am confident to talk in front of many people I can express my ideas well I cannot influence people easily I take responsibility of my actions I cannot manage pressure I cannot give relevant ideas on certain topics I can take risk I cannot solve problems easily C. Analysis 1 2 3 4 5 I am confident to talk in front of many people 1 1 I can express my ideas well l l I cannot influence people easily l l I take responsibility of my actions l l I cannot manage pressure ll I cannot give relevant ideas on certain topics ll I can take risk ll I cannot solve problems easily ll Based on the above answers obtained, it was identified that my skills in decision making is the weak points but I have the potentials to become a good decision maker because I can take responsibility well and take risk if needed. I might be observed to be weak in expressing my ideas, but I know I have good ones. I just have to develop my confidence. Solving problems is always a joint process between me and my husband, and I know I can enhance that skill in time. I will consider the suggestions of my friends in order to develop my personal and professional skills. Activity 2: Progression Plan The SWOT analyses Strengths Weaknesses Communication skills Negotiating Multi-tasking Good learner Confidence Stress Management Decision making Handling Conflict Opportunities Threats My opinion is considered Encouragement from my family Support from friends I have good ideas Culture Environment Level of responsibility Arguments and debates Learning Style Application Honey and Mumford have identified four main learning style preferences, namely: Activist persons who like to be involved in new experiences and new ideas. Reflector persons who like to collect data, and review before presenting conclusions. Theorist persons who adapt and integrate observations into complex and logically sound theories. Pragmatist persons who are more practical by nature; likes concepts that can be applied to their job. My goal is to develop my skill in decision making. It wont be hard for me because I have the determination and the potential to give good ideas. In order to achieve this goal I will use the reflector style of learning identified by Honey and Mumford. This style of learning reflects my qualities being careful, thorough, methodical, thoughtful, good at listening and absorbing information and dont jump to conclusion. My learning process will be fast and easy because different kinds of information are accessible. Monitoring I have to monitor the progress of my learning to know if I have improved or not. I have to identify mistakes incurred in the process so that I will be able to correct them. I will provide for myself a diary or activity planner where I can write activities that will help me strengthen my weaknesses. I should incorporate in my diary or planner activities like: where the learning took place; people involved; reason for undertaking the learning; what was learnt; topics covered and skills developed My family and friends will also help me in the learning process by asking them comments if I have improved skilfully and intellectually. In monitoring I should be able to identify my priorities for personal and professional development. I will also see if there are opportunities for developing my skills. I will create an action plan and evaluate my personal performance. From time to time I will ask a colleague or family member who can honestly assess the progress of my learning. The feedback will help me see the areas I still need to improve and the skills I have to enhance.

Medical Mechanics of Ultrarunning :: Running Sports Essays

Medical Mechanics of Ultrarunning The medical aspects of ultramarathon running are a enormous part of what makes up the individual ultra runner. Many traumatic injuries can take place when a person gets involved in this specific sport. " It is impossible to overemphasize the importance of injury prevention and treatment to the career of a successful athlete. It has been noted that the champion athlete is very often one who has attained a high level of lay expertise and downright craftiness with regard to injuries, whereas novices seem to keep getting hurt. Very often the difference between the perennial champion and the perennial bridesmaid is just that edge: an ability to avoid and/or recover quickly from physical trauma."(Marty Liquiri) This quote made by Marty is stating the point that preventing injuries is a essential aspect that a runner has to consider. There are a limitless amount of injuries that a runner might have to deal with. Several precautions can be taken to make sure most of these injuries do not tak e place. Proper stretching is a very major part of preventing injuries concerning running. In order to run any distance your muscles as well as body have to be readily prepared. There are four stretching techniques that I have learned about. The first one is ballistic stretching. This stretch activates the stretch reflex, allowing the stretched muscle to contract quickly and the runner to bob up with a lot of speed. This stretch is not a popular one and is not very useful in ultra running. The second stretch is called the passive stretching. This stretch needs a partner to apply extra external pressure to elaborate the stretch. This stretch is safest when applied to more experienced athletes and is not advised for beginners just learning the whole stretching routine. The third way of stretching is referred to as contract-relax stretching. In this stretch the muscle is allowed to contract actively while being stretched and then stretched once more immediately after it relaxes. The fourth and f inal stretch is considered static stretching. This stretch is positioned and held for thirty to sixty seconds. There is a gradual build up of tension in the muscle being stretched so the stretch reflex isn't activated. As the tendons are slowly being stretched the inverse stretch reflex is being activated and the tension in the muscle lessons so the muscle can be stretched even further than before.

Environmental Factors Leading to Civilization Along the Nile Essay

A. ) The two most significant environmental or physical geographic factors that contributed to the development and expansion of the United states had to be the Gold Rush, and the Irish Potato Famine. The Irish potato famine was devistating to Ireland and laid waste to it’s population, but ended up spurring Irish immigration to the United States, leading to both growth and expansion. The gold rush that took hold in the United States was one of the biggest factors that pushed people west and lead to a greater settlement of the west coast and all areas between. These two major events helped to shape the country that we know today. The Irish Potato Famine was one of the most significant environmental factors that helped develope and expand the United States because it not only lead to a population swell, but contrubuted to our work force due to the large number of immigrants that came to the U. S. as a result of it. Before the famine, the Catholic Irish peasents lived a very poor lifestyle and were constantly under fear of being evicted by their land lords as their farms were downsized and their rents were raised. They grew potato crops in the fertile Irish soil and used those crops to pay their rents and feed their families. This was many families’ sole source of income and nutrition. When the potato famine began in September of 1845, the potato crops failed universaly in Ireland, something that had never happened before. The poor Irish had been acustomed to a bad crop in a spot or two and they always had adjusted to circumstances before, and there was little loss of life over this previously. From 1845 and for the next 4 years, the crops would fail repeatedly and this caused wide-spread death, from both starvation and opportunistic infections such as typhus, that mowed people down by the thousands in their hunger weakend condition. There were many theories about just why the crops failed, both superstitious and religious, but we know now that it was the fault of a fungus, carried on the winds from England where it had been brough over by the North American ships. This fungus, phytophthora infestans, florished in the damp cool climate of Ireland and consistently ruined the potato crops. By 1847, two years into the Irish Potato Famine, people began to seek greener pastures either as a result of eviction, or the promise of a new and better life in the United States. There had been Irish imigration prior to this, but 1847 was really the first year where major waves of Irish families began to come to the United States. This lead to a population explosion on the eastern coast of the United States and the Irish immigrants who lived through the voyage found little welcome, often being taken advantage of and stolen from. The Irish immigrants brough with them new ideas about culture and religion and provided laborers for road work and other tasks that helped expand the United States. The Civil War is another event in wich the Irish took part. The immigrants joined the Union Army in droves and some atribute the northern victory in that war to the seemingly endless supply of Union troops, composed largely of the immigrant population flooding into the United States at that time. How different would our country be had the famine not happened and the immigrants not come? The other major event that contributed to the expansion and developement of the United States was the California Gold Rush. The Gold Rush was an exciting time in the history of the United States. It lead to a huge amount of expansion and settlement of the western-most poritions of the United States that were largely under-explored wilderness at that time. In May of 1848 gold was found along the banks of the American River near Sacramento, California. By August of that same year the New York Herald published an article about these findings, and so the Gold Rush was born! Men flocked to California to seek their fortunes in the hopes of a better life for themselves and thier families. They left their wives and children and came over land and by sea via Panama. Prospectors seeking to strike it rich brought with them their American ideals and values, and are a big part of the reason that California became a state in 1850. The California gold fields were an exciting and dangerous place to be, with few laws and really no way to inforce those that they had. Prostitution and drunken brawls and shootings were common place and many-a-fortune was won and lost in gambeling at camp. Most prospectors did not, in fact, strike it rich and left disallusioned to either go back to their families, or to settle the area around San Francisco. As a result of the Gold Rush, California’s population swelled from just 25,000 people to well over 220,000, when all was said and done. The population increase helped to settle the area and made San Fransico a major trade port for the Western United States as well as a gateway of sorts for travel and immigration. The influx of interest and travel in the west also paved the way for industries such as mining for silver in Nevada and the building of a transcontinental railroad to the west. The Gold Rush played a huge part in the expansion and development of the United States in that it had such an impact on California and the west. California and the west coast as a whole just wouldn’t be what they are today had the Gold Rush not taken place. B. ) The most significant environmental or physical geographic factor that contributed to the development of Egyptian society was the Nile river. The area in question is made up of harsh, sandy desert and mountains. The river Nile flows down through this area and, due to the run-off from melting snow in the mountains each spring, carries with it rich, fertile soil that is really the only soil in the area suitable for crop production. The people in the area could use this fertile soil to plant crops and, based this new-found dependability, begin to settle and build permanent dwellings and villages. Since the villagers could count on two harvests per year, in most years, this would create and excess of product that could then be used for trade. The area near the Nile river is the only area that is very suitable for a sustainable way of life. That is why civilization grew up there due to the ability to grow crops, domesticate animals, and build permanent dwellings. People no longer had to be nomadic and search out food, they could grow and raise their own! The Nile also had a big impact on the religion of the time. Egyptian religion was ploytheistic and Egyptians worshiped many gods, usually based on nature. They had a sun god, a water god, an earth god, and so-forth. Each year when the Nile river flooded, this encouraged the belief in such gods and their devine will. The destruction that the flooding could cause was thought of as punishment for wrong doing and people created rituals to ward off the anger of their gods. A good crop grown from the soil brought down by the flooding was considered a sign of the gods’ pleasure with their people. The Nile’s influence could also be felt in it’s natural ability to be a trade route for Egypt. The arid desert climate makes it anything but an ideal area to travel through, and many found the river was a swift and cool route over wich to do business. The waters brought not only fertile soil for farming, but a measure of wealth and prosperity that contributed hugely to the growth and developement of the civilization. B1. One example of cultural diffusion is the relationship between Egypt and Rome. After being defeated by Rome, Egypt prospered as a province and was the main residence of Augustus Ceaser. This had a huge cultural impact on Egypt because Augustus began to rule the city under Roman laws and this was a whole new way of doing things. There are also the effects on Rome to look at. Egypt was a boon to the Roman Empire due to the trade routes through the desert, the abundant desert minerals that could be mined and later used to make statues and ornaments, and the glass that could be found in Egypt as well. One would have to wonder how different Grecian art would have been without the natural contributions that were made by Egypt. There was a natural diffusion that took place simply by co-existence with people of a different culture and background. The depictions of Egyptian people and gods began to look more Roman in dress and features and, likewise, the Egyptian architecture such as Obelisks became popular in Roman art and architecture.

Governments Role in Consumer Protection Advertising

U.S. Governments Role in Consumer Protection Advertising The United States government has continued to grow in size and influence, its effect on marketing is no exception. Consumer protection and product safety include the efforts made by government, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and individuals to create, protect, and enforce the rights of consumers who buy products or services. This may also be identified as consumerism, or the organized efforts of individuals, groups, and organizations to protect the rights of consumers (Pride102). The FTC is the primary, but not the sole, consumer prote ction agency at the federal level and oversees an array of consumer protection laws. The principal goal is to afford customers a deception-free marketplace and provide the highest-quality products at competitive prices. The FTC also ensures that advertising is not false or misleading. The FTC may also benefit businesses by helping them to understand laws and assess new marketing methods for each year. It also brings businesses together for hearings and conferences to help firms avoid price fixing, deceptive advertising, and questionable telemarketing practices (Pride 76). Succeeding the Sherman and FTC Acts, in 1938 the Wheeler-Lea Act was formed. It prohibits unfair and deceptive acts and practices regardless of whether competition is injured, and also placed advertising of food and drugs under the jurisdiction of the FTC. This had a substantial impact, because before this amendment the Federal Trade Commission could only restrict practices that were unfair to competitors.
